The breakup of A68a means the largest iceberg is now A23a, which broke off from Antarctica in 1986 but has remained grounded on the sea floor. Though there is another iceberg called A23a that is slightly bigger than A68a, it has not moved from its original position in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf located in the Weddell Sea. A68a, on the other hand, has travelled more than 1500 km in the past 3.5 years to arrive at the South Atlantic region. A23 was formed in August 1986 from the Filchner Ice Shelf Front , and at formation it had an area of ~3,850 km 2 , and was ~5-600 m thick ( Grosfeld et al, 2001 ). The world's second-largest ice shelf was the destination for a POLARSTERN expedition that ended in Punta Arenas, Chile on 14th March 2018. Oceanographers from the Alfred Wegener Institute, together with German and international colleagues, have collected important data along the entire glacier front of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, which will help them investigate the melting of the Antarctic The 3,800-sq-km iceberg, There is another great tabular berg called A23a which is slightly bigger but this has hardly moved from its calving position at the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in the Peninsula), 1148 432km2 and 12 5km3 (iceberg A23A), 901 703km2 and 10 8km3 (Filchner Ice Shelf), as well as 499 277km2 and 5 2km3 (Coats Land). Our findings are discussed in comparison to recent studies based on cou-pled sea-ice/ocean models and passive-microwave satellite imagery, each investigating different parts of the southern Weddell Sea west-east section at 76° south, north of the A23A iceberg, which hadn’t been possible in the past due to the adverse ice conditions. These measurements will now supplement the data from moorings that have constantly recorded the temperature, depth, salinity and flow speed of water masses in the southern Weddell Sea for the past four years.

The iceberg A22A was photographed when it was about a third of the distance from South America towards Cape Town, South Africa. A22A is one of the largest icebergs to drift as far north as 50 degrees south latitude, bringing it beneath the daylight path of the International Space Station (ISS).

And it is on the move. After breaking off from the Antarctic ice shelf three years ago, it is closing in on some of the world’s largest penguin colonies on South Georgia Island, a remote British territory in the South Atlantic, where it could block them from their hunting grounds An iceberg that had been the world’s largest is now breaking into pieces close to the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. Scientists had worried about the impact on the remote island’s wildlife if the berg had grounded on its continental shelf.
